Our '53 Three Roller 40C

Post by TimT » Sat May 03, 2008 9:45 pm

My dad rebuilt this 40C a couple years ago now. When we brought it home we found that just about everything needed repair/replace or rebuild. He also blasted and painted it in the old farm shop with a home made blast booth. Not bad for 81 years old! We use it around here quite often and its a great little machine.Image

That shows one of the main reasons that we do this.
Just think, the next generations will be wanting to restore what? An Ipod? A computer game?

Great pics! Thanks for posting them.
My dad just turned 90 in Feb., and is the one responsible for my
interest in the early stuff. He and I restored a Model A when I was
12. We have been through several crawlers and tractors since.
We're very lucky to have these great men in our lives!

May not be relevant, but my brother had to go help out a friend of his haul some large round hay bales. The bales were on the other side of a ditch with water in it. The friend has a fairly late model NH skid steer on tracks. The NH would get across the ditch at a run with no bale, but that is it. My brother took a 420 with a 90 loader and a bale spear on the bucket. He could pick up a 1200lb plus bale and walk right through the water to the other side. He ended up moving that whole side of the field by himself because the skid steer could not do it.

I think the 40C would win that one. Its amazing what that machine will do. That big stump was removed with it. We dug around it with a little backhoe and then sawed under it with a chain between the Ford Jubilee and the 40. After that I dozed around the stump and built up a pile of dirt on one side so I could use the weight of the 40 and traction, then using the 40 to jerk the chain a couple times it started to loosen up, After a couple more pulls I rolled it right up out of the hole. We used the skidsteer with forks on to help carry/push it so we didn't tear up the lawn on the way to the woods. We have pulled some realy heavy logs with it too, we built a trailer mounted arch to help lift the front of a log and it can move logs that our MF 35 with big tires and weights will not pull.

Hey I still have my original Nintendo. :D

You could chain 3 skidsteers together and that thing will probably drag them off kicking and screaming. We use Bobcats in and around the foundry and they absolutely piss me off. Won't get stuck easily but they won't push much of anything either. We get fork trucks stuck in the dirt all the time and barely get them out, one time I was about ready to chain 2 Bobcats together to get enough grunt. And if you try taking one on a slope you're going for a ride!

Nice paint job, I like the decals, it's those details that make it look genuine even if it's missing the battery tin.
