Look whats in my oil bath air cleaner pan

Post by IslandCrawler » Mon Nov 03, 2008 1:20 pm

This is an old photo from when I just got the thing and was carrying out a complete inspection/maintenence of everything. I thought it would be fun to share!

As you can see it looks like the oil soaked earth being mined up in Canada!

The most frustrating part was trying to roll the wire mesh filter just-so that it would fit. The vertical position of the filter housing nestled inside everything doesn't help. I wish it had the replaceable paper element like other JDs.

K&N Air filter

Post by dustin502 » Tue Nov 04, 2008 12:35 pm

Eric, I wouldnt recommend using a K&N air filter. They allow alot more air to pass thru the filter but they also allow larger particles to pass thru as well. They work great For street applications. We got in about a dozen Harlan tow tractors a few years ago, they came with a cummins turbo 4cyl and K&N air filters. We had these tractors about a year before we started having trouble with the engines wearing out. The cylinders were worn very bad. After the second engine rebuild We changed to a traditional paper type filter and that seemed to fix the problem so far. Anyway just my thoughts on the subject.

A properly oiled and maintained K & N should out perform most paper filters. Maintenance is critical, as is proper oiling and cleaning.

I agree with Lavoy . The K&N filter I had in my truck went 117,000 miles , highway and farm miles , when I tore the engine down for rebuilding the cylinders still looked good (camshaft went soft at 217,000 miles). I have one on my Honda Fourtrax that has been cleaned and re-oiled every year since '93 and is still in good shape . A oiled cotton air filter actually works better if it is slightly dirty . Cleaning and oiling is the critical part of the equation . Once the filter is cleaned it must be completely dry before oiling . Use the proper oil when re-oiling the filter after cleaning .

I've run them in every vehicle I owned since the mid 80's give or take, never had a problem. The one problem I did have one time was actually on a vacuum cleaner believe it or not. I bought a high end WAP Turbo vac and had it on my blast cabinet. It smoked the motor in short order. After a call to WAP, I find out that the numbnuts were not oiling the filter after they installed them from the factory, just the factory oil, and no recomendations to re-oil. Needless to say, they sent me a new motor free of charge.

I've used K&N filters for quite a while on my autos and trucks and I think they are great. K&N sells filter recharge kits that include their brand cleaner and oil- a little pricey but then you know the cleaner and oil is compatible.

If you can, I would try and adapt the intake size to accomodate a larger filter. If you get one that will clamp right on the carb or the intake pipe, it will be a smaller filter, will much less surface area.

im going to put the biggest i can buy on it, i figure home depot would have some pvc adaptors that i could make fit , ive built a few street rods from scratch so this should be pretty easy. although it wont be as fast as a street rod it sure will have more traction!! Eric
