Yup the end cap on the cooler froze and cracked. Both ends of the cooler have been welded before. One end looks fine, the other is cracked and showing about 1/16" gap for about an inch along the circle of the thin part of the transmission oil cooler cap. This is Deere Part AT-16540 which looks like a scarce part. Looks like cast iron that someone welded poorly. I think I'll grind it clean and try to braze it from the inside unless someone has a better repair idea.
And yes the only way in is to pull the front housing, radiator and then get down to the transmission cooler.
Oh well this gives me an excuse to change all the water and transmission cooler rubber hoses. One less thing to go wrong later.
Also I found that there was no thermostat in the cooling system. That explains why the thing never warmed up and was putting out so much smoke.
New glow plugs really did a good thing on the starting. Couple that with getting the primer working it started right up. Now with a thermostat it should actually start and warm more like a diesel should.
