Another old crawler...

Post by M.Canute » Mon Feb 08, 2010 1:46 am

Anybody know what this was used for, for sure? I couldn't find any information about it other than someone said they had seen pictures of International crawlers modified similar to it for tree transplanters.

Pretty sure it is for tree work, I have seen a few modified that way. They all look like the same company did them.

Those are for tree farms. Most of the newer stuff is CAT. You can run a coulter on each side by the tracks to side cut the tree roots before harvest.

Also you run a piece that is the shape of a "U" that cuts each side and under the tree. Behind it there is a conveyor with a shaker to shake the excess dirt off. They then bundle the trees in packages of 5 or 10 and ship them packed in straw, refrigerated bareroot.

Order my trees this way every year. I'll look for some pix.

heres a video

I found this video. Real similar to the people I buy from, but they follow right behind w/a conveyor, its a little more efficient than the video, but I think you get the idea of how it works.

Forgot to mention, they were telling me their machine is also adjustable for width. I had a few pix at one time, but can't seem to locate. To me it looks like a little bit of an engineering marvel. You can also add a "topper" to it, to cut all your trees to whatever height you want.

About 2 or 3 years ago, Green Magazine had a good artilce on one of these conversions (I think it was a 420C).
