Hi,

Once. Back about 1976 or so.

I still have the original, worn on both sides. Dad used her heavily from 66 to 76, and then the roads were cut, the house built and the pool put in. So, after that she took it a lot easier and so the 'new' cutting edge is still on it's first side. :)

What I wish I had was a JD350 in the same kind of shape. The 420c was dad's but I had a JD350 and liked it a lot better for most things. The 350 was a bit of a bear in the woods on the old mountain, though. The access roads had been cut with the 420c, so the larger 350 with wider blade always was a tight fit in certain places! :P

That would not matter now that I'm no longer on the mountain, but in the river valley. I keep toying with selling (or trading) the 420c and getting another 350, as I really miss my old 350. But how in heck am I ever going to find one in this good a shape?

later!

Stan

Hi,

Man! I bet this sets a record for the most delay for a reply!

I had been working in the Dallas area from December 2010 to October 2013, and not in the board much during that time. I was home only a few weeks a year during that time, so about the only thing my 420c did was get started once in a while.

Now, I have no idea why I missed it in April 2010, though. But, four years for a reply? Sheesh!

Anyway, I was looking at photos this morning and wanted to link to this thread, and so saw the question about other tractors.

I have a 1950 'M' which is used as my garden tractor and a 2008 5103 with a loader which is used for just about everything else.

Oh, and a little 2005 x495 with a 60" deck for mowing around the house. I am always afraid of running into something with the 5103 when in close. So, we have the Little Diesel. In practice, Paulette usually mows the acre right around the house while I do the other seven with the 5103. :)

Thought I was reading this for the first time...

After 4 years of off-and-on use the corners are still sharp on my new cutting edge. The edge it replaced was worn almost to the bolts on both sides and was not an original JD part. Poor thing has seen some adventure.

Hi,

I still have the original edge, worn out on both sides. This one is only half worn on Side One, with the flip side still new. It was put on in the mid 80s. Needless to say I do not use it anywhere near as much, or as hard, as Dad did.... ;)

Hi,

OK. The original shots are back in this thread. As long as I am at it, I may as well add in the shots from my 350C thread to this one, where the 420c is also in-frame. :)

In the near future, I will get the old girl out of the barn for a good washdown. Looks like she will be going to shows from now on for the most part. I ought to get the dirt off of it. Time for my usual spring servicing, anyway. That will be a perfect time to hose it off. I will take some more detail shots since we have good photo hosting now. :)

Stan

Edit: while I was at it, I also put my avatar back, which is me on the 420c. :)

Oh I don't know, first thing I do with anything I restore for myself is put it in the dirt, that's what they are for. Nothing more fun that playing with a "new" 50 year old crawler after you spent months (years) rebuilding it.

exactly Lavoy... after I restore my 440... I'll only use it in clean dirt.. lol...

btw... nice machines Stan...

Nice looking 350c stan. There nothing better than a dozer with new paint and straight sheet metal on it!

Hi,

Well, for me, what is better is that the 350c paint is no longer as shiny as it is in those shots. Meaning, there is a nice layer of dirt and dust on it. ;)

I was going to take that simple blade extension on top off shortly after it was delivered - and paint the blade and the lower part of the frame - but have not done it yet. Mainly because of the fact I keep using it. :P

I did attach a drawbar, which is the same part numbers as for the 420c, and Lavoy had one of. It was originally a winch-equipped machine, so no drawbar. I don't need a winch but a drawbar is used quite often (by me, anyway).

I suppose it is time for me to put the 420c up for sale. I have not used it since I got the 350C.....

There’s nothing better than having a winch and drawbar! You never know when one or the other would be needed!!!!

Hi,

It is still here. And the newness of the 350C wore off and I went back to using the 420c some again. I keep thinking about doing a full restoration of it. Meaning get it all apart and check everything, not just a paint job.

I haven't given any thought to selling it. I suppose if I did think about it, I would sell the 350C. I really don't need two....
