Well i came across this little guy that a bank had repossessed and then let sit for 2-3years and I always wanted a dozer so he followed me home. Ive never driven or worked on anything like this before but im thinking this forum will be of great value and knowledge to me. The data tag on the dash shows the serial to be 455270 but the model # is worn off so im not 100% sure what model it is, im sure someone can tell me though (It has a GM diesel in it). When i got it delivered i noticed a crack in the left rear housing im not sure what the parts name is. Also it has some rear hanger brackets are those for rear weights or a backhoe? And my seat looks at little different from other pics ive seen maybe its missing parts besides the cushions. Anyway here's some pictures

That is 440 ICD with a 63 blade and backhoe seat and mounts.
The broken piece is the steering clutch housing. I would advise not using the crawler until that part is replaced, or you could damage some more expensive parts in the process. Pretty good looking old girl, you will enjoy it.

looks like a nice machine for you to work on and learn about.

Lavoy is right ,don't be driving that around until you replace that broken housing,don't want to damage those expensive gears in there.

Nice looking project crawler there, esp. with the diesel.
I'm curious though looking at the pictures of the back and steering housing.
My 440 it seems the steering housings are left and right specific due to the brake rod hole.
It kind of looks like you have two rights.
Is there a rod going up to the brake/clutch on the broken side?

I'm prob. completely off on this thought.

Appears to have 2 RH steering cases. Did not know they could be switched like that.

Hi,

Yeah, that RH housing on the LH side really sticks out, doesn't it?

I presume someone 'made do' with it.

I'm also going to presume here that it's now cracked because it was subjected to loads reverse from what it had been designed to withstand.

Fortunately, replacing it with the proper housing will not only correct that nasty crack, but will also return the visual aspect of it back to normal.

Just looking at the bright side, as dim as that may be given all the work that is now in store here!

Hello,
At some point John Deere reduced parts inventory by making
a steering clutch housing with two brake rod holes and two ajustment
holes.Just one part can do either side.I know cause I've got one.
It might not be in this case but just a thought.Nice machine and if the
rails look as good as the pads you have a good starting point.

Of course, they did. Clever. I've never seen one of those, but it sounds like a plan to me.

I know! It was not only to reduce parts inventory, but to make lots of folks wonder why in heck someone put the danged thing on backwards!

Yeah ive located a replacement housing from PBH Equipment up in New Hampshire. Im about to finish my restoration on a 1964 Ford 4000 tractor and then i can finally get around to the dozer. Only thing ive done to it since my first post was put a new fuel filter on it and crank up the engine, which ran better then i expected from sitting for a couple years before i got it.
