New to me 350C
New to me 350C
Two are better than one right?
Im still up in the air about it. Initially that was the plan, I knew ahead of time it didnt move (reverser to trans coupler) and that all of the related problems to the reverser coming loose. I really dont mind re-bushing things or getting stuff line bored or welded up, between my father and a good relationship with the local Caterpillar dealers machine shop stuff like cross bars , cases ,frames and the like arent a big deal to me, and that is what I expected because I didnt pay much for it. So I started dissasembley and came to the injection pump. Low and behold is a CBC pump,. As most know this shouldnt be on a 350C, so I did a doubletake and made sure it was a 350C again (which it is). The engine also doesnt have an oil cooler, and its serial number doesnt match 350Cs engine run. SO im assuming someone changed out the engine at some point and replaced it with an engine out of a 350 or possibly a wheeled tractor or something. Now should I try to find a later 3152? Or do i just fix the coupling, throw some bushings and welds on some stuff and try to sell it?
Hey Lavoy
The engine serial number is 172473T, and it also says it is a "type M43TF". All the references in my 350C parts books say the type should either be a 3152DT or a 3164DT. Assuming im reading the parts books right, the 350Cs began using 152s , and the begining engine serial number was 392334 (1974) , they then used 152s until engine serial 590074(1981). Serials 590075 to 621172 (1981 to 1983) were all 3164s. They also list a batch of engines 100001-127775 (1983-1985) which im assuming are 164s. I dont know where a 172000 fits in, the 350 parts book has serial numbers in the 60000 to 70000 range.

Is it really a "C"?
Alot of times people will put on a "C" series decal.
Check under the seat to see what type of steering it has in it. If the steering clutch handles are connected to a valve on top of the transmission it is a "C", if has power assist between the steering clutch housings and the clutch levers it would be a "B" on one of the last few straight 350's. If no power assist and hooked straight to the steering cluches it is a straight 350.
I personally look under the seat of every machine as i don't trust decals or serial numbers.

Yup, its definitley a C model, I wouldnt have bought it if it wasnt. Another way to tell a C from a B is the final drives. The bolt patterns and overall shape is different. The Cs also have 3 additional bolts toward the rear upper corner that hold the brake anchor in place. A quick way to tell a 350 from a B or a C is that the 350s had the reverser lever on the instrument panel. The B and C moved it to the side of the battery box.
Re: Is it really a "C"?
JWB My 1970 350 has 2 valves under the seat for steering assist. The seral number is one of the last 350 models but the reverser is on the left side dash .What do ya think is going on? I know it is dry dlutch because I did a rebuild in March.Thank you Gerald.JWB Contracting wrote:Alot of times people will put on a "C" series decal.

Late straight 350
I believe that the power assist steering was available on late mode straight 350's. Nice option as the steering cluch levers will be a little easier to pull.
