1964 John Deere 2010 track loader

Post by Afzimm » Tue May 24, 2011 5:30 pm

I had been dealing on one of these here in Minnesota for the past couple weeks. I found this on in Pa. and bought it this morning. The price was a couple thousand less plus it had new paint. I am working on getting it back here to MN. 1100 miles lie between. I am open to any ideas you guys may have or truckers you know who go east. Here's some pics. I'm excited to get this old girl home, been wanting one of these for a long time.

Call Willie at 402-740-1303, he is either in PA shortly, or will be there again in a month or so. Tell him I said to call.

I had Willie transport one of my 2010s in the past- he is a really nice guy, is really fair on his prices, and will go the extra mile to get it done. Coordination and timing of the delivery can be challenging with him since he is constantly travelling all across the U.S., but I would definitely use him again if needed.

I called Willie this morning. He's on the case, thinks he can maybe pick it up next week already. He was in TX this morning and heading towards the east coast. Thanks for the heads up. az

2010 arrives in Minnesota

Post by Afzimm » Thu Jun 16, 2011 9:20 pm

Willie dropped off my 2010 track loader on Monday. Super nice guy, would use him again in a heartbeat. We ran it off the truck and let it sit. Today was the first chance I had to "play" with my new toy. Man is this engine cold blooded, had to use the glow plugs for full 30 seconds and she finally started after pumping the primer a couple times. Smoked grey and white for about 5 minutes as I let it warm up at high idle. Cruised around my yard a bit, smoke cleared right up. Not sure why so smoky at the start, but she really runs nice. Not sure what the HP is but this thing has a lot of power. A lot of torque too, I pushed the bucket into a gravel pad and dug down a couple feet, no problem. Hydraulics are fast and smooth, not surprising from Deere.
So far I really like this 2010. I am glad I found a good one. I am getting 6 loads of gravel next week, I'll pile it up before I spread it. My bucket needs a new cutting edge, oh and I am building a ROP and roof. I will get some pictures, I'm using 3x3 quarter wall tubing. AZ

Whoever painted this 2010 did a very nice job.

Today I torched off all these crooked teeth. I don't think I'll need them anyway. A nice new sharp cutting edge will be put on this bucket. I hate torching the old one off, my Bobcat dirt bucket needs a new cutting edge also. Looks like a fun week ahead. I need to find some cutting edge material. Image

2010's REQUIRE glow plugging to some degree at virtually all temps other than a warm, already been run engine. These engine never would start without being warmed up, so don't worry about that. As to the smoke, every 1010, 2010 I have seen does this until they warm up, so I would not worry about that either. These engines are indirect injection, so they function a little different than newer direct injection engines when cold.
Glad to hear you got it home.

The 2010s have around 50 HP.

Do these engines have precombustion chambers like the old Cat's? I guess pencil type injectors too. Engines of this era shure smokes white until the temperature rises and combustion is good. Injection pressures today are insane. If you crack a line you can get hurt and the line has to be changed (common rail)!!! But the pipe is equally chromed inside and out... I better like some smoke :)

Yes, they are pre-cup engines, but not pencil injectors, they are much bigger.

Smoke

Post by Afzimm » Fri Jun 17, 2011 8:11 pm

Cap that makes sense. And from now on I'll remember what you said about the white smoke, every time I start it. 8)

Lavoy I'd like to see a cutaway diagram of one of these engines. Know where I could see one? Were these engines used in wheel tractors? The 3020 and 4020 diesels didn't start hard and have glow plugs and primer pumps..

Only breakdown I could tell you of is a parts or service manual.
Other than being a diesel, these engine have very little resemblance to 3010/4010/5010. They are a sleeve deck engine, the larger engines are individual sleeves. These engine are indirect injection, 3010 and larger are direct injection. All 1010 and 2010 used the same basic engine whether crawler or wheel. These engines were also used in combines, swathers, stationary power units, and some other I have probably forgotten.

I purchased an original sales brochure for the 2010 crawler last year at a local tractor show- it has a cutaway view of all of the major crawler components, including engine. It is a drawn schematic rather than photographs, so can't see a lot of details but is useful to get an idea of how all the components fit together.

I'll see if I can't find it and maybe scan and post that portion of the brochure this week.
