1957 420

Post by JD430C » Wed Jun 22, 2011 4:47 pm

This spring the local vegetable farmer approached me about making him a field. I plow all of his fields every year and have had my eye on his 420 crawler for several years. He said he would trade me the 420 if I cleared him an acre or two.

Took me over a week to get it done because it rained off and on while I was trying to work making it a gooey mess.

The veggy farmer told me had only been sitting for 4 years, but I have been plowing the fields for 6 years and I never saw it move. I figure it has been sitting for 10+ years. Everything rolls freely and it still steers good. UC looks to be in great shape too. I had planned to keep it, but some bills came up so I think it will have to go.

I had to tow it backwards about a mile because there was no place to turn the truck/trailer around.

The 420 looks like a toy when compared to the 550. Just 10 years ago I thought 420s/430s were big :).

That is what I would call a "barn" find. Makes you wonder how many more are out there wasting away. I know of an MC not far from me, been wasting away for at least 20 years, but he won't sell it.

Wow, I love the pics... good job on clearing that field too... how did you get rid of all the roots, just push the top few inches of top soil to the woods?

Lavoy- the first 2 years I didnt even know it was there. He told me he had one in the barn, but couldnt see it through all the weeds and trees. Dad and I looked it over today, couldnt see where it had ever been abused like most up here are. Hate to get rid of it, but I need parts to start my JD powered Chevy.

Dustin- I pushed all the trees over first, then cut them up. Some spots I skimmed a few inches off, other spots cleaned up just by pushing lots of debris over it. The veggy farmer is planning on planting pumpkins in this field, so he wanted to save as much top soil as possible.

Well it looks like it was put away with dirty tracks. Wish I was closer if you decide to sell.

I see it is emissions compliant.

Those snow shoes have very little wear on them.

My 420 is getting a saw mount for my Stihl to come along for the ride!

Nice find.

The one pic where you have the blades chained together looks like a momma bird pushing a little one out of the nest.

Update for yall. Had it running tonight. Runs, drives, and steers good. Had to rebuild the carb and seal up a hole in the hydraulic tank. Think my neighbor is gonna buy it. Really wanted to keep it, but found a parts truck for mine.

Roadbuilder- I am doing a ground up restoration on a 1983 4wd Chevy 1ton dually pickup. Am going to attempt to stuff a JD 6-359T and a NV4500 tranny in it. Wanted it on the road 2 months ago, but the cows decided I needed to buy them a wrapper  . This truck will be a summer driver/show truck- no mud, salt, or snow.

Here is a pic of the 6359T in a dodge D200 that I bought last summer. Junked the truck and kept the engine.....

Hi,

Are those snow cleats original or built up? I haven't seen snow cleats looking like that in a long, long time.

Well, on a machine, that is. I have a couple NOS pads on the shelf that have never been bolted to a chain. I can look at those any time I like and see what they're *supposed* to look like, of course! :P

I was going to make a remark about the first photo, asking you what oil and gas you've been feeding your 430c to make it look like a 550! :P

Seeing the old 420 sitting in the barn makes me a little sad, though. Mine is doing the same thing this year. I haven't fired it up since around Thanksgiving last year.

The field clearing looks wonderful.

Later!

Stan
