JD 440 ICD rebuild (moving along)
Now that the engine is installed, it is down to the easier but time consuming details. The radiator, new isolators, new hoses, coolant bypass line, fuel return line, and generator are now installed.
Like the monkey said when the train cut off his tail, "it won't be long now."
Fuel return line
Radiator shroud
Coolant bypass pipe
Generator BEFORE
Rebuilt generator
New isolators
Ready to bolt up the pump drive

Oil filter input & output lines
I got tired of waiting to do more, so I built these lines from scratch yesterday. It was only 100 degrees outside, but the humidy was not as high.
I looked far and wide and could not locate anyone that had the original lines that I could copy. So I used measurements from kind folks, along with numerous trial and error to end up with what I think will work fine and look somewhat original.
Double flare
Inlet and outlet lines connected to oil filter cannister.
Oil pressure line in place.

Thanks for the nice comments.
The hardest part was the limited area to work and do measurements since I have the engine installed in the crawler.
The oil filter cannister bolts to the flywheel case so there was no way to get the lines exactly right before the engine was installed.
It is like eating an elephant, one bite at a time until I get it all done!!

double flare question
Nice pipe work.
Question, I have never seen double flares on copper lines, always steel. How to they hold up on copper. I assume they are a lot easier to form versus using steel line.

Double flare is always used on copper, not steel. Steel lines can split out if double flared. Steel gets a single flare at a 37 degree angle.
At no more than around 30 PSI on this engine, copper is not a problem. I could have used steel like the originals but I had the copper pipe already.
Now that I have my patterns, I can always get the local shop to build steel ones if for some reason these do not work out. But I feel like they will outlast me and the next collector at least.

Set the valves for cold start (.012) and timed the injectors with the DD tool.
Not so much left to do to be ready for the first start since rebuild.
Deer hunting is now cutting in to my rebuild time, and that is NOT a complaint!

I enjoy seeing your 440ICD rebuild progress it looks like a 6 way hydraulic blade on the front I would like to have one of them . I have a 440 gas with a #62 blade that I put a tilt cylinder on , it is handy but the hydraulic angle would be a great asset also . I noticed the tracks had the
bars at the rear they may be on backwards I heard someone say this makes them wear out faster . I look forward to seeing a picture of your 440 pushing dirt keep us posted .

Thank you for your comments! I am glad that you enjoy the rebuild, although the progress is at a snail's pace.
You are correct that the blade is a factory 6 way hydraulic. It is a JD Model 64. They are the most rare from what I can determine. And, they are the most useful.
You are also correct about the tracks being on backwards. The track swap will take place once the mechanical rebuild is finished.
The good news is that the undercarriage is in great shape. At my age, I could never wear it out with the few hours a year that I will run it. The previous owner spent a ton on the U/C and then had to sell it. The chains and grousers are 4 bolt. I doubt that they are original 4 bolt but feel sure they are 350 tracks. He also replaced some of the bottom rollers.
I ran it (pics pushing dirt) for a while but one of the lobes in the blower snapped and locked it down.
It will be like a factory fresh unit mechnically when I finish. The new engine should out last most of us on here.

Hey JD440,
I just noticed looking at your pictures that my oil line fittings and oil pressure gauge are in different holes than yours.
Mine has an oil line where you have the oil pressure line and my oil pressure gauge is where your oil line is. Then my rear oil line is in the lower front hole, whereas yours is in the upper hole.
Which way is correct?
After looking at the service manual, page 60-5-3 it looks like you might have your pressure switch and return oil line backwards.
I could be wrong though.

Thanks for posting, I will take a look and make sure I did not swap something.
I will know for sure when I spin it over to build oil pressure as I will have the lines disconnected to make sure oil is flowing.
If you look at the 4 th pic down, you can see a factory bolt plugging the lower hole under my "return" line.

After looking at the block diagram again on page 60-5-3 in the JD GM 2-53 Service Manual, we both need to move pipes.
I have my oil return and my oil pressure send reversed, thanks for letting me know.
Your oil filter "to" pipe should be in the upper hole, not the lower one.
Nothing like working together to figues out all of the details.
Thanks again!

Yep I agree completely. After I looked at the diagram more I noticed my rear line was in the wrong hole (if I remembered where my lines were correctly, I'll look the next time I'm at the garage).
I'm not sure why I noticed that when I did, because I've looked at your pics a hundred times.
Well hope your still making progress. Mines slow but sure. I washed my motor and blower out good with diesel fuel and it looks like brand new.
It's about halfway prepped for paint/primer and a new gasket kit from agkits waiting to be installed.
Keep the pics coming as will I.
