440ICD Rebuild (Nearing completion) Part III

Good weather and rounding up various parts has helped move the project along.
One of the parts is a new solenoid. I rebuilt the starter but did not think I needed a new solenoid. It made a big difference in the starting speed for some reason.
After a new switch (rotary) and other parts, I connected all of the electrical system.

I spun the engine over for the first time. The first few times it just cranked over. After a few times I began to see a little smoke in the exhaust. The last time I tried it, it hit a few licks and would have started had it had the fuel connected. I figure it popped off on residual oil and/or the fluid left in the injectors.
I am very encouraged by that and cannot wait to hook up the last of the fuel lines, add diesel to the tank, and fire it off.
The fuel tank is now in place, just need to run the fuel line from tank to input side of filter cannister.
I checked the cooling system for leaks and it is solid! I need to add antifreeze and conditioner, hydraulic fluid, and she is ready to do the first engine run.

That's some great progress 2006. I'm pumped to see a video of the first fire or it pushing some dirt.
Sounds like it will fire right up. Do you still have to do all the cold and hot adjustments on the motor and governor?
Get some close ups of the fuel line routings and the hydraulic tank if you could. They would come in very helpful for me since I've yet to see some good pics of one.
Your build has helped me a ton with these up close and in depth pics. Keep them coming.
I finally got the 4 crossbar bolts drilled and tapped and a new shim/spacer made so the undercarriage is ready for paint. Just need to finish up the rock guard wear bars and primer the big pieces and mine will be all ready for paint.

I had spun the 2-53 over several times just checking various connections, electrical, starter and new solenoid, etc. It had popped a few times like it wanted to start during those spins.

Last Saturday, I poured fuel in the tank after completing the "plumbing" from the tank to the fuel filter. I turned on my cell phone video, turned the switch and this is how quickly it started. I did not run it up much because the tach is not on it and I knew it would suck some oil as the pump primed and pushed it through the engine.
The sound on a cell phone video is not the best but you get a taste of what it sounds like.

That is the second 2-53 in a week I have got to hear run. First one was in person (courtesy of Mr. Howard Yoder) and now yours 2006. My motivation level to get mine going is through the roof right now.
That motor sounded really good and am impressed by how quickly it started. I'm not planning on mine starting that easily. Makes me wish I would've spent the money on an N kit while I had it apart.

Did you try pulling your solenoid apart. I took mine apart just to check things out and cleaned stuff up inside. If I remember right there is a large copper washer and then two "studs." One the battery terminal connects to and the other is connected to the copper buss that goes down into the starter. Mine had some wear on that copper washer so I spun the washer a little bit and shined up all the contacts but have yet to try it.

Ben,

Thanks for your comments. I cannot tell you how excited I was when it started right up like that. I know I froze in my tracks (no pun intended) for a few seconds.
The "N" kit does not cost any more than the "S" kit. They simply change the pistons to the 21-1 compression style.
The only other thing that you need to buy is 35N injectors, which are the same price as 35S type.
I am convinced it is one of the best deals out there!

Going N series is a no brainer, there is absolutely no downside that I can see, especially for those of us in a colder climate.

My grandpa said there aren't many hours on it since he had it rebuilt, but he doesn't know if it has a N kit or not. So I didn't get new pistons for it when I pulled them.
I never took any pics of the tops of the pistons so anyone could tell me one way or the other.

Ben,

On the solenoid, my general rule of thumb is that if I have the tractor/crawler apart, and the parts are old, or suspect, I just replace them.
I kept the old solenoid and will go through it at some point. Who knows, it could turn out to be a good spare. I have another 2-53 that I will rebuild after this one.

Ran it up to about 170 degrees today. Breaking in going well, no leaks.
