1958 420c basket case rebuild

Post by LarryD » Fri Jul 13, 2012 9:30 am

Here are a few pics of my basket case 420c that I picked up this spring. This thing was scattered far and wide to the wind as you can see. The engine is completely disassembled and was in a barn 15 miles from where the rest of the machine was, along with the sheet metal and a few other pieces. This is my first crawler and I am excited with the progress so far. I have my own Machine and welding shop so I figure I can fabricate or repair most anything I need to. Wish me luck ya'll........I'm sure I'm gonna need it.

That's neat, that is a high serial number clutch type reverser 420. Had one, got another one in the shed that I am going to restore myself some day.

You've def. got a project on your hands there Larry.
Good luck and keep the good pictures coming.
I'm surprised at how many parts look similar to the 440.

Yeah, took me a little reading in here to figure out what I had. I bought the service manual for it and then began scratching my head trying to figure out why the reverser on mine wasn't in there. The reverser was really messed up on mine. Someone had ran it without any oil as best as I can tell because the spider bearings were completely wiped out and galled to the shaft, and all but one thrust washer was completely wiped out. Lavoy, just wondering, would you happen to have any of those pinion and spider thrust washers available, and if so how much? Thanks in advance for the info, and another big thank you and a firm hand shake for this fantastic site.

I don't think I have anything used, new maybe still available.
Get a 440 service manual for the breakdown on the reverser.

Thanks Lavoy. Yeah, I figured that out about the 440 service manual. Actually I got the parts breakdown from Mother Deere herself; that was really all I needed. Also, all those thrust washers are available from Deere incase anyone is looking for them, and the clutch discs are too, but they are a bit pricey.

Making a little more headway on this thing. I got the new seals installed in the reverser unit today, and got the new input shaft bearing in place also.

Just an update....Haven't got to work on this thing much lately as I been busy working on everyone elses stuff in the shop right now, but I did manage to make a die to make those radius thrust washers that go behind the spider gears in the reverser. Deere has them for $8.00 each, but I just really couldn't make myself give that price for a darn brass washer. So I went to work and built a die to form them myself. I'll put some pics of the die and the thrust washers up soon.

Here is a link to my Flickr page that I put all the progress pics of my dozer on. Hopefully someone might see something they enjoy here. :D

Looks like your moving along Larry.
I saw a can of thinner there. Are you spraying the parts with a gun?
You just doing a few parts at a time?

When I painted I did a ton of parts at once to save cleaning the gun out so many times. I'm not so sure that was the best idea, I was wore out after those days.

Yeah Ben,

Just doing a few parts at a time. It's a pain in the butt cleaning the spray gun that many times, but it makes the entire job seem a little more manageable. Plus it keeps from having my whole shop dedicated to just my crawler.......which doesn't exactly pay the bills. That is one of the reason for the rather slow progress right now is because I have a 1954 GMC truck in the shop too that I am restoring for a fellow. I have to say though, doing this truck got some cogs turning in my head. I'm considering possibly finding a 1958 (same as the crawler) Dodge powerwagon to restore and use it to pull the dozer to power shows and such. That's way off in the future though.

Larry,

I really enjoy seeing the basket cases be brought back to life.
I know you will have put loads of work in to it when you are finished.
Keep the pics coming. You can actually post pics directly on this board in your message if you place your pics in a free site such as PHOTBUCKET.

Well guys, as promised.....I finally got time to put some pics up of the die I made to form the radius thrust washers that go behind the spider gears in the reverser. I got the differential section of the reverser together and it all works great.

That's neat. What did you use for material, I would have thought bronze would just crack when formed like that.
