Rescued from the scrapper. Crawler #2

Post by mulligan » Sun Nov 18, 2012 5:14 pm

After searching for a few weeks I was directed to a scrap dealer who had "old dozers". I stopped by to see the fellow and sure enough, there were 3x 420 crawlers.

One assembled, which is what I took home. Another about 80% complete and I plan on picking up a few parts off of it this week. The third was basically a carcass with only a 4spd trans, main drive housings and beat to death tracks.

Being the fellow was a scrap dealer I was able to trade an old car and a few engines for the first crawler shown here.

This crawler is a 5spd (ser# 100557) w/reverser, tach option, 5 roller, shot rails, and half of the pads are "ok". I hope the reverser is in good shape to help solve my mess up on my first crawler.

I should be able to piece together a decent crawler from the two.

Its a shame to see these ol' girls being crushed. :(

Crawler #1 might be a 40, or at least it has 40 sprockets on it.
Glad to see a couple old girls saved from the scrap heap.

The serial # shows 420c but who would know what happened over its lifetime. Its a 5spd with the short shifter and reverser. There are a few torch scars on the sprockets.

What are the tell tale signs of a 40 rear? I dont think the 40 chain will work on my 420 sprockets?

Look at the difference between the two crawlers. 420 sprocket has round holes, 40 is more like spokes.
