Found this on Ebay, and I'm thinking it may be worth some welding time to make one fit my Gearmatic 8a winch.

BTW, I just picked up some used winch cable at the ski area - swaged 7/16" ~20,000 lb. test. If some of you live near larger ski areas, their winch cats use lots of cable and once there is a defect, they have to discard many feet of it to get the spooling correct, so they are often disposing of lots of good-for-logging cable for a good price which will work fine on a smaller logging winch. No harm in asking.

Paul,
I think you will find that it is too restrictive, and your 8A will shred it in fairly short order.

I agree with Lavoy. I've had a couple of those fairleads over the years, and have one now on my Samurai rockcrawler. They are fine for occasional use but not very rugged at all and would not live long in a logging environment.

This is a old thread but I thought that i would add to it since I finally remembered to take my phone logging with me to take some photos. I have been trying to get as much dead standing logs cut down and hauled to the log pile for next winter. I think this is going to be the last few days of having some snow on the ground since it is a post to be in the 60's the next few days. Having some snow on the ground makes it really nice to skid logs.

Looks like your new fairleads are working well. I'm scrambling to get some downed trees moved before the frost leaves the ground - cleaner wood, less soil disturbance. This winter has been a challenge in this regard. Cutting clean wood is certainly more enjoyable. Best regards. Paul

I pulled out my first hitch this winter last weekend. I was hoping we'd get some snow but finally gave up. It was sheer ice in the woods, and none of the usual wet spots were really frozen. After going for a ride sideways (even with caulked tracks) I gave up, gonna wait till things dry out. What a terrible winter here.

Hydrogen, winter in PA was pretty terrible here too. Most snowstorms were followed by temperatures above freezing which never gave much of a good snow base for skidding logs. Maybe next year!
