lost key now what

Post by draggin61 » Fri Oct 24, 2008 1:09 pm

My key fell out the other day while operating and is now most likely forever lost. It is a 350B . Are these keys all the same or how can I id the key I need?

When you say "key" do you mean the ignition key? If so, I would think that any ignition key for a 350B would work- I believe equipment keys were pretty universal for a particular model until recently.

Substitute for a lost key

Post by Dave Seager » Fri Oct 24, 2008 4:43 pm

 About 40 years ago I had the distinct pleasure of operating a JD 350 shovel dozer that had a missing key! :? We had a "scrench" (multi purpose chainsaw wrench/screwdriver) that we just stuck in in place of the key  It did the trick for starting and shutting down for years! The hole in the switch got a little oversized after a while, but the switch kept working!

Those keys are universal you can even get the keys at any dealer across the counter . If your ignition is geting to the point that the key falls out when running put a key on a light chain and long enough to hook it to a dash bolt or an eyelet under the dash bolt when in use .A keyed ignition switch is a handy thing to have don't put a screw driver into it unless you need to run it or want to get a new one later .Digitup

Deere used three different keys for 350s, so it just depends which one you have. All available new - I've got hundreds of them here in a bucket. Key switch with a plastic insert takes a Indak key "squigley" - but in most cases, you can just stick a pen knife into it - or screwdrive and it works just as well. Some also use a second type of Indak key but no plastic in the switch. The key is flat with symetric cutouts on both sides. Third version is all metal, and the key has the Deere logo on it. That's the only key that actually looks like a modern-day ignition key.

Deere key tutorial - a few photos

If you went to work for a Deere dealer in the 1960s or 70s, you'd be given a complete set of John Deere keys. Here is it. Only "new" addition was the Yanmar-Deere key added mid-70s. Last dealer I worked at was in 1991 - so there may have been some additions since then.

Thank you for this useful reference and pictures - perhaps this should be added to the FAQs above so it is not buried by new topics.

Hi Jdemaris-

What do they call the type of key used on the diesel 2010 crawlers? Mine is round with two thin "appendages" that fit into the two small slots in the ignition switch.

Thank you for the great info. My key is like the first picture the Cole-hersey . I will assume that they are all the same and that they are available at the dealers.
Great answers. Thanks again.
