450C battery hook up question
450C battery hook up question
My 450 C has two batteries. Some one removed all the cables. It looks like there are two grounds and as I recall two of the batteries were hooked together. I think there is only one wire to the starter. Can anyone advise how to hook up the battery cables so I can try and get her started?
I just bought new batteries...but my usual method of hooking the new ones up like the old ones has been undermined.
Any help would be appreciated.
The tractor has been parked on a slight incline nose up. Is that enough to make it lose it's prime. Last time I tried to start her she wouldn
t stay running.
Thanks
Phil

Battery Hook Up
Gentlemen,
Maybe I'm misunderstanding but I think those batteries should be hooked up in a "series"--at least my 450 is setup that way. Positive cable to the positive on battery one; battery one negative to battery two positive and then battery two negative to negative ground.

To my knowledge all 450's were 12V systems. Most I've come across usually only have one 12V car battery in them. Clarence....You may want to double check your connections again, and if they are in fact wired in series, you may want to check your starter and charging system to see if it really is a 24V system. If it is, it must have been an option or a foreign build. Steve.
I do not think Clarence is referring to a series circuit - if I read post correctly you would both end up with 12 volts
A lot of them had two hot cables off of the disconnect switch 2 two grounds
others used two connector cables & one ground as well as one hot
so long as it ends up being positive to positive , neg to neg - it will be 12 volts

the way Clarence has it........"battery one negative to battery two positive and then battery two negative to negative ground." would be considered a series circuit. As I see it battery #1 neg to Battery #2 pos. would give you a series circuit and therefore 24V. Anytime you have pos. to neg. you create a series circuit (or a short). I am also familiar with the 2 pos. cables to the master switch. Steve.
