450c stuck in 2nd gear

Post by DIGDUG » Mon Dec 07, 2009 7:11 am

Good Morning fellow gear heads,

I am looking to purchase a 450c loader with backhoe:

The gear selector is stuck in 2nd gear. When I went to test the machine I was going to move it, but the guy said it has been that wat for 10 years or more and not to move it, It shifts from reverse high and low no problem.

Does this sound like a linkage problem, or is it in fact the tranny is broke and only works in 2nd gear.

Any thoughts or feed back would be very appreciated!

Thank you.

Those trany's are near bullet proof so I would suspect trany is OK but linkage is seized or locked up .Buy it accordingly and take your chances. It's not worth much if a 4 speed transmission has only one gear even if the rest of it works .I always tell them if they want big bucks for it then fix it right .Digitup.

Thats interesting, i have a straight 450 that is also stuck in 2nd gear. But it has been sitting awhile... the engine is locked up, throttle control is siezed up, my air filter was rusted out. Sounds like it is linkage.

JD 450 LOADER.I would hope you were payed to take that one away .DIGDUG the leak is probably in the piston outer seal.Deere made the piston out of aluminum so when it wears down[It won't be the first one to wear down]at a certain point of wear in the o ring slide side the oil leaks out big time but it will get pressure up as the o ring hits the end of the wear spot .Eventually the oil pressure by passes on both sides of the seal and the piston will need replacement and that is the inside of the directional shift pack Give yourself lots of time and lots of room you can rebuild it yourself but find a manual and do this as soon as possible as you will overheat the clutch pack with little or no pressure on that piston if you keep working it .That is why a good transmission oil pressure gauge is so important.Digitup.

The engine is locked up because of water getting down the exhuast pipe, the muffler was packed full of rust, fibers, etc from mice best i can tell. The crazy thing is that the engine is a 239 repower from John Deere and when i pulled the head off to see what was going on the other cylinders were like new, no knicks, scratches, or marks of any kind, the engine cant have over 100hrs it is too clean and new looking. The pistons hardly had any soot stains. Thankfully my good friend has his own mechanic shop and specializes in tractors and equipment so he is doing the work for me. I will keep you posted thanks digitup

Thanks digitup2 and jd450 loader.

I bought the machine cheap. I am hoping when i pick it up and finally start going over it, the shift selector linkage will be rusted or bent making it similar to the machine JD450loader is working on,.

unfortunately this machine has a good amount of hours in total, so the transmission may be worn where the piston and seal is that you are talking about digitup2. The guy I got it off has owned it for 12 years and never tried taking it out of 2nd, so who really know what I am getting into, but thanks for the help, I may have some more questions in the years to come :) :)

I now have the manual so ill begin studying!!
