450C How to change steering clutch oil??

Post by Flatheadyoungin » Thu Apr 08, 2010 3:18 pm

Well, I thought I had it figured out with the book. However, when I went out and crawled under the dozer I saw two plugs but they were on the bottom of the housing. So, I assume they are the drains? Where would the fill be, on the outside of the trans case, in between the tracks and housing?

I changed the final drive( access from rear of dozer) oil and the transmission oil (large 1-1/8" drain plug). I even took out the screen filter in the transmission belly. I just can't figure out this steering clutch oil change that the manual talks about.....or am I missing something, and the steering clutch oil is part of the transmission?

Thanks for all of your help!

I have changed the steering housing oil at least 3 times on my C and D dozers, but without having the machine right in front of me,I just can't remember where the fill opening is.But not to worry-when I get to my shop tomorrow,I will look and have an answer for you.

No big deal....I probably won't get back to it for a few weeks.....

Long story short, I had to take the injector pump back off and replace an umbrella seal I tore when I put it back on......ran great, backed it out of the garage, shut it off to tell the family i was headed over the hill to work on the driveway........went to start it back and it kept dying.....like running out of fuel.....probably a clogged fuel line or even the new fuel pump died......

gonna tinker with that this weekend.....

thanks again!

Late again, sorry, but I have your answer.Look right above the very center of your sprockets and you will see your fill plugs. They might be covered over with caked up dirt so you might need to do a little cleaning first. The owner's manual is very confusing on this as it leads one to believe that steering and tranny hyd. oil is combined which is NOT the case, and then it will sort of mention they are separate systems. Each side of your steering reservoir holds 7 gallons.
