450C Transmission

Post by Greg » Thu May 06, 2010 9:01 pm

Hello. I recently bought a 450C crawler loader. I bought it knowing the clutch had a problem. I couldn't get the free travel adjusted. you couldn't even feel it. I ran the tractor around a little and it would push good except in the higher gears. It would slip then. I realy never warmed it up. I should have checked the trans pressures but i didn't. I was convinced the engine clutch was bad. pulled the engine and the fingers were burn't off the pressure plate. I thought here we go. But when i removed the pressure plate you could tell the clutch wasn't slipping. The disc was even stuck to the flywheel. So now i am wondering whether i have a prob with the HLR or i should put it back together and adjust the clutch right and set the pressures on the trans pump It sure would be alot easier to go into trans now. Kinda hate to if nothings wrong. What do you guy's think. Any advice would be appreciated. THANKS Greg

I have always thought it is easier to open things up while you have them apart, mainly because I don't have the time to repull things like the engine again later. While you have it open you can observe the condition of the major components and know how much wear is on things in case it doesn't work when you put back together. Looking inside doesn't mean you have to commit to fixing them, and you could at least maybe put in wearable items like new seals.

Just my $0.02, not having had to open up my H-L-R (yet).

I having sort of the same issue. My 450 just stopped pulling and the oil level was low. I filled it up and nothing, I thought at first it was the clutch because their is no free travel but, I am beginning to think it is the transmission pump? Any ideas?

Technical Manual

I think the best thing is to breakdown and buy the deere technical manual. It has a trouble shooting section and tells you how to test the components and adjust them.
