Hi let me start off with that i'am new here and what a great site.I just picked up a 1968 i think 450 dozer with six way blade. The dozer is in very good shape i got it from the orginal owner and only did light grading work its whole life mostly for lawns. The machine has new sprokets and idlers my problem is when adjusting the tracks going from foward to reverse a couple of times then nothing. I would apperciate any one who could tell me what to look for.

I would start by checking the oil level in the transmission. Your machine uses JD 303 oil (85-90 gear oil) in the tranny. If you still dont get results you may have steering clutches that are slipping? Does the machine move any?
Prime mover JD 450 G six way. Secondary mover 450 loader.
303 fluid is a common systems fluid, not a gear lube. I doubt that a 450 tranny would even pump gear lube but I could be wrong. Modern equivalent is Deere HyGard, IH Hytran, Mobil 424, and many others. It is a fluid used for combination gear, hyd, power steering, etc on most of the Deere wheel tractors starting in 1961, combine hydro systems, reversers and HLR transmissions in the crawlers and a host of other applications.

Since we are talking about the H-L-R transmission in a 450, there is probably one other thing to mention. Although the Universal Tractor Fluids generally meet the specs for JD 303 as well as other hydraulic fluids, the UTFs are designed to be used in a wide range of applications and not tailored specifically for machines requiring JD 303.
It has been previously mentioned by various JD mechanics and commercial machine users on this board that they would only use JD HyGard in their H-L-R tranmissions and would not use UTFs. However they did not consider use of UTFs an issue in non-tranmission reservoirs such as a loader hydraulic reservoir. I am not sure of Lavoy's position on this subject.
I have found a generic equivalent in my area that is specifically formulated only to meet requirements of JD 303, but not sure that is an acceptable substitute for HyGard.
