450 - Removing Clutch Housing

Post by jgbanshee » Sun Dec 18, 2011 8:28 pm

I am in the process of getting in my hlr trans to redo clutch packs. I have the motor out and almost ready to remove clutch housing but I do not know the best way to remove the hydraulics on the right side (brake side) that goes through the housing. It is real tight between the housing and frame rail.

one line has a fitting that has to be turned to remove the housing i think it has a set screw on it and you will turn it about a 1\4 turn its been 4 years since i pulled mine out but i think thats what i had to do

I used a off-set plumbers pipe wrench. It was the least trouble to use. Notice I didn't say "Easy" These fittings can be a real pain in the........ Especially on a 400G. The 450s have a little more room but not much. So my friend... Good luck! :)

Leonard Layton,
Do you know if this threads all the way out or like FL450B said, is there a set screw and 1/4 turn to remove?

What series do you have? The 450s I rebuilt the HLRs in were both "E" models. Then several 400Gs. On them I removed both fittings and they were both pipe thread. I remember them being a real pain to remove. I don't remember any set screws but I have slept sense then and there may very well be one. Maybe some of these other guys can help with that.
