1984 John Deere 455D Adding Rear Hydraulics.........

Post by Frankdozer » Wed May 23, 2012 6:12 am

I've been lurking at this website for a while and decided to join recently. I just purchased a 1984 John deere 455D with a 4 in 1 bucket. It sat for 6 to 7 years but fired up great and runs tight. I'm changing all the fluids before any use. It had the rear backhoe from the factory but somehow disappeared long ago. The rear mount is still there and they just looped the 2 lines to it together. Can I separate the lines and install a valve so as to be able to add a 3 point hitch ? If so what's a good valve to use...and I'd like, besides power up, power down instead of gravity down. Has anyone else done this? Thanks, Frank

I had a 3 point hitch that mounted on the backhoe mounts on a 555A several years ago It even had a hydraulic adjustable top link on it and a float for the lower arms this came with a 3 tooth V ripper to boot ,It was the Swiss army knife of attachments .This was not hooked to the backhoe hoses but they installed smaller hose and a 4 way loader leaver with float and the side to side was top link .Digitup.

These are some good past threads to review about adding 3-point hitches to 450 series JD crawlers:

Also I am not sure if the 455D has an open or closed center hydraulic system, but if you disconnect the backhoe hoses and install a valve you need to make sure that you are consistent with the system (i.e. if open center you have to have continuous flow through in the detent position without a dead end or you could blow the pump).

How can I determine if it has an open or closed center hydraulic system? I have all the manuals for it. Thanks, Frank
