Almost Like A Rubbery Smell...........
My 1984 John Deere 455D crawler / loader with 7300 hours, ( if correct, I suspect less hours ) is now running great. Lots of power, starts right up, no leaks, runs as it should. In this hot weather, around 90 here in Maine, when I use it, the exhaust has a smell almost like a hint of burning rubber. I'm not looking for trouble and would not repair it unless it was a Major Problem. In which case I'd sell it. Any ideas on the smell? I'm the curious type. Thanks, Frank

Look for hoses that may be with out a heat shield too close to heat sources. Exhaust pipes or manifolds comes to mind.

Apologies in advance everyone!
A guy walks into a bar and sits down next to a someone who is closely
examining something held in his fingers.
He watches him for a while till he finally gets curious
enough to ask what it is.
"Well," said the other guy, "it looks like plastic and feels like rubber."
"Let me have it," he says. Taking it, he began to roll it
between his thumb and forefinger, examining it closely.
"Yes," he finally said, "it does look like plastic and feel like
rubber, but I don't know what it is. Where did you get it?"
"From my nose," the second guy replied.
Anyway, back to your dozer- does the smell come out of the exhaust pipe and is in the smoke, or does it come from the engine? In addition to the heat shielding I would suggest you look with a light and see if there is a bird or mouse nest somewhere.
We had a D6 one time that had an oil bath air cleaner, and the first time I cleaned it there were about 4 mouse carcases in it. The interesting thing was the dirt in the bowl had displaced all of the oil so they were essentially paper thin and dry as a bone. No idea how many years it takes to accomplish that.
