450C brake issue

Post by dmack856 » Sun Jul 22, 2012 4:58 am

I have a 450C dozer that I just replaced the left steering clutches and brake band. In trying to adjust the new brake band, I have run out of adjustment on the brake and it still does not hold as it should. I did take the brake assembly out to install the steering clutch. Does anyone have a diagram of the correct assembly?? I am assuming that I have something in wrong but there is not that much to the whole brake assembly. Any help or insight would be greatly appreciated!!

Also, I do not have a manual on the dozer......

Brake install

My first guess is that you don't have the brake assembly installed properly on top of the brake band. It is tricky to get the small fingers on the brake assembly on the brake band.

Is there a trick to getting those two ears to stay correct while putting the brake assembly back in? I have had it apart twice and getting ready for number 3.......I think it needs wing nuts instead...lol.

And I purchased a manual for it this morning online.....printing it out now!

Thanks

David

Brake install

Post by JWB Contracting » Sun Jul 22, 2012 9:51 pm

I stand at the back of the tractor and start by putting the front tab in position (longer side of the tab) I the lower the brake actuator assembly down on to the brake band and push the rear tab forward, it should start to bind, pull your hand out and snap it down. I feel your pain, I have had to disassemble in the past when I didn't get it right. Can be difficult when the brake is way out of adjustment, so install it a few times on the band and keep tightening the brake until it snaps together.

Not a very good description, but the best I know how.

Jason,

The thrid time was charmed! I was not getting the forward tab into the ear on the brake band. I actually did it the way you described.....course I had not had a chance to read your post...lol. I backed the adjustment all the way out, made sure the front was seated then snapped down the back. Then I started adjusting the slack in the brake band.

The old girl now turns on a dime and leaves a nickel change!!

Thanks for your help!!

Dave
