We've run Mobil Delvac 1 in tractors and combines for probably 20 years or so, never any problems. Works real nice in anything that runs in the Winter, helps with starting if you are someplace with no electricity.
Our Walmart here is now stocking the Rotella Synthetic 5W-40 in gallon jugs, seems to me pretty reasonable too.

For the diesel engine in my John Deere 455D track loader my owners manual says SAE 15W40. If I switch to synthetic do I still use SAE 15W40? I notice that you are talking about synthetic 5W30. What's the difference? Thanks, Frank

I guess the most basic answer is synthetic oil is man made, conventional oil is refined crude oil. I probably don't know the exact details well enough to begin to explain the difference. Do a net search on the difference, you will likely get a much better answer than I can give.
One of the main benefits of synthetic oil over conventional oil in cold weather is that it is "thinner" for lack of a better term, and promotes easier starting. It is also more "slippery" if that makes sense. The benefits of this are cold starting, less wear, less friction, better mileage, and probably more.
The synthetic equivalent for 15W-40 is 5W-40 for the most part in heavy duty applications. Make sure if you switch to synthetic, you get an oil for heavy duty applications.
