350 plain transmission/reverser troubleshooting

Post by lane_neal » Sun Mar 10, 2013 7:58 am

Good Morning, new member, first post. As stated I have a 350 with torsion isolater and direction reverser, bought machine and nothing as represented. It has a gas engine, found cracked block, and stuck, so never ran. Most rollers bad, had to remove finals, as clutches/brakes stuck. That's history to present,my main question is troubleshooting rverser and clutch valve pressure release with engine removed, haven't fond anything about that in my manual without power applied. I rally appreciate any input, thanks.

I'm not sure I understand what it is you are wanting to do? :) You can't check your reverser pressures without having power to it. If that is your question.

thanks for the reply, yes, I am looking to check the reverser system prior to reinstalling the engine, due to the amount of damage to other portions of the machine, I don't trust the sellers infomation about the drive train.

Unfortunately there isn't a good way to check the pressures on your reverser without the engine installed. I have read where some have tried to hook large drills to the input shaft and use that as a power source. Personally, I think it's a waste of time and trouble and probably a good way to get hurt. I've never tried it and never will. You need to have the exact power that the reverser is going to have when it's being operated. This way you get exactly what your reverser is doing.
You can drain your reverser fluid and pull the filter to check for any metal in the bottom of the reverser case. You can also check for input shaft play and of course any leaks that you may have around seals or cooler lines. You can also remove the reverser pump and check it for any wear or damage.
I would install the engine and check the reverser before you reinstall the rest of the machine. You can even do this without any tracks or even the final drives as long as it is a dry steering clutch machine. You can on wet systems as well but there are a couple of provisions before you can.
Sorry I can't give you any thing other than that. So, good luck and welcome to the forum!!

Thanks for your input, you gave me the info I needed, we will do the inspection as you stated, then put the power unit on line and see what happens. It took way too long to pull the engine first time, but now we see how to do it quick so not too much problem. Again thanks for your input.
