I have read 100's of post(s) on this forum before asking this question and have not seen or found a diffiniative answer yet.
Q: Can I power shift from forward to reverse and vice-versa with out using clutch and/or coming to full stop?

Q: What is correct shifting procedure?

Note: I am in 1st gear

Welcome to the world of posting- we really don't bite.

Your 450C has a high-low-reverse (HLR) transmission and they are a "powershift" type transmission that allows shifting from high-low-reverse without clutching as it is fully hydraulic, assuming you keep the gear shift lever in the same gear range (you have gear ranges 1 through 4). You don't have to stop to shift the HLR.

However when you shift gear ranges (the gear shift lever), you will want to be fully stopped and clutch pedal in before shifting as to not grind gears. I almost never shift my 2010 (predecessor to the 450 series) out of gear range 1 as the high speed in gear range 1 is plenty fast with a worn out undercarriage. I am not sure on the 450C, but there is a gear range on the 2010 for towing if the crawler needed to be towed.

Here is a spec sheet on the 450C crawler loaders that includes the travel speeds for each combination of gear range and speed (H, L, or R):

welcome to the joys of crawlers.... I have a 78 450C also and if everything is adjusted correctly its a amazingly smooth shift. If it seems to slam from direction shifting , address it , if not it could be costly.. good luck

seems to shift from foward to reverse quit smoothly but I get an occassional clunk sound. I bought it two weeks ago and had a heavy equipment mech with me to inspect as well as did full service on it when I got it home, he said undercarrage looked like it had been completely redone and was , in his opinion 80-90 %. I just dont want to break it cause from what I can see repairs of any sort could be costly. only thing wrong with my dozer is that t-handle blade control it's badly worn and can be a pain to operate the blade at times. and fron what I have seen on this forum replacement part(s) are spendy...thanks for the help Gents! this is a great forum.
what type of manual should I get for maintenance and adjustment specs and where do I get it?

You don't have to clutch for shifting from forward to reverse but I do, it seems much less jerky and I am not as ap to get whip lash.
