1977 450c
1977 450c
I have a 1977 450c dozer that outer r/h bearing went out. I have a friend that helped break down r/h final drive and replaced all bearings, races, and seals and pinion gear. after back together the final drive is good and runs good. I have a problem with steering left and right and adjusted linkage which helped but still not very sensitive.I checked the fluid for both steering clutch housings and both appears full but both sides look like have moisture and milky. I need location to drain plugs for both clutch housings and transmission drain plug to replace all hydraulic fluid. A photo or description of locations greatly appreciated. Thanks for any help. I just joined forum and have learned a lot already.
I also have a 450c.
The steering clutch housings have 2 drain plugs per side. one at the bottom of the housing and one just higher. 7 gal 26.5l of HY-GUARD per side. Fill plug is plug above track on the outside under batter box/hyd. tank
Transmission drain plug is on the bottom through a hole in the belly pans. 8 gal, 30.3l HY-GAURD The transmission filter in in front of the Radiator.
check also final drives. 1.625 gal - 6.15l each, the fill/full level plug is on the back of the finals and the drain is on the bottom. Same oil.
If you have not bought manuals yet (appears not) you can get a free look at the parts diagrams at the Deere website.
You will need the tech manual so I suggest you buy it on line and print the pages you need as you go or take the file to a print shop and have it done (print on both sides as it is a few hundred pages) and put into a binder. Order it from Deere and you will have it in a few hours max.

Airman, if you read the next post RE 350c oil in finals, The 350c and 450c DO have some big differances according to the 450c tech manual. For starters the final drive housings on the 450c will allways need checking and, the only way that the clutches and transmission can share a common sump for oil is, if a conversion is/was completed on the early 450c's to allow for it. The process is detailed in the Tech manual and requires that two oil seals be removed on the transmission drive shaft (now discontinued parts that may not have been installed on later models) as well as other modifications including the removal of bleed hoses inside the clutch housings. Later models may have come from the factory with the changes done and would therefore have a common sump between transmission and clutches. I will be looking at mine soon to derermine if this has been done to it. I found all this information in the 450c tech manual. page.. 40 15-5
