problems with my winch

Post by kman » Sat Nov 30, 2013 6:55 pm

I have a mid 70s 350 crawler with a winch and a Loggers arch. Recently the winch has refused to engage, no free spool or wind at all. Does anybody have any suggestions or recommendations? Thanks.

First, Make sure that the pto is turning. you can see it from under the winch. Is it below freezing there? Shift cable has not come off ? Look under the seat, under the filter on the right and make sure the arm is moving. Fluid level ok? I think it takes the same filter as the engine.
Start with those things.

350 winch

Hi, Do everything scotty said, that's the first step, I have a lot of experience with jd winches.

1st check pto by taking out the oil filler plug on right side of winch,if big ring gear is turning when you start the dozer pto is fine.

2nd jd is notorious for getting water in the winch oil which you will also see by removing the filler cap on winch. If oil is really milky colored and if where you live it is below freezing like here -10 Friday then the water/oil mix can be freezing around the winch pump and starving it for oil. change all oil and winch filter.see if it starts working then.

3. Also make sure your control cable is moving the control valve and not come off as scotty said.

4.If after all previous steps winch does not work. there is a pipe plug on top left of winch with allen head to remove. You will probably have to take off the arch only takes a couple of minutes. You will need a fluid gauge. the winch should run about 1000psi. if you have no pressure probably the pump went out. if you have low pressure you can shim the relief valve refer to the manual please.

also if you can't get your hands on a gauge pull the left side cover off winch and at idle have a friend activate the control lever,,,you should atleast see the brake cylinder release and contract. if it does not move try revving motor alittle at a time,,if it starts working at a higher rpm then you have low pressure.there should be no oil on this side of winch it should be dry,,,but those are other issues..seals...

try this stuff first and let us know what happens, best of luck Mark.
