Reverser doesn't reverse

Post by GRWeldon » Wed Dec 18, 2013 9:18 am

Bet y'all haven't heard this statement before, have ya? :-)

So, after looking through the tech manual, I'm assuming that since my reverser doesn't work in reverse that the rear clutch pack must be shot. This is a guess. I haven't tested pressures in the reverser as I don't yet have a pressure gauge or associated adapters. I will obviously do this before yanking out the reverser. BTW, is there a "kit" that contains all the necessary adapters, hoses and gauge to check the reverser?

I've searched "removing reverser" and it seemed there was a good thread on the subject at one time but now a few of the key posts have been removed by the author, leaving questions unanswered.

Assuming that I WILL have to remove it I'll bet it's not as simple as removing the bolts and pulling the case out. There are shafts that engage in splines so I assume I'll need room to move the case back. Since it's connected to the transmission, am I correct in assuming that I'll have to remove the transmission also? Viewing the pic left in this thread:

it looks as if the reverser needs to be removed from the bottom? What else am I needing to remove? Engine? Loader? Looks like it might turn in to a BIG job, especially since I don't have any hydraulic lifting equipment other than this machine!

Being optimistic, is it possible that my trouble is not the reverser rear clutch? It was working just fine yesterday until I got hung up a bit on a stump. It doesn't seem like it's even trying to engage. I would think that it would at least "nudge" itself in the reverse direction before the clutch slipped, especially since it was working well before the stump incident.

Looks like I might become familiar with the innards of this beast sooner than I anticipated...

Comments, opinions, suggestions or any other help is certainly appreciated. Y'all have been very helpful and patient with me and it is certainly a blessing. Thanks.

I would check pressure first, something seems odd here, it shouldn't just die like that.
Reverser comes out the front after engine has been removed. Loader can stay on I would think, just lock the arms up for safety.

As I mentioned, is there a "kit" that is available with the components to do that? I don't see thread sizes listed anyplace. Operators manual maybe? Have to wait until mine arrives...

I got a master oil pressure gauge kit at Harbor Freight, wasn't real expensive if I remember correctly.

Harbor Freight (or Northern Tools?) has a 200psi oil-filled gauge that is inexpensive. It has 1/4" threads. You will need to reduce the gauge to 1/8" to fit the reverser. Use a long (4") nipple to raise the gauge and get a wrench on the nipple. Then find the two pipe plugs on the top side of the reverser control valve. Check engaging pressure on the straight-up plug, and disengaging pressure on the one at an angle.

That is very similar if not exactly the one I have. If you can get an oil filled 200PSI for not much more money, that is the one I would get.

The reverser has mysteriously started working again...
My, my... the shape of things to come? :-)

I would drain and change fluid and filter if you haven't already.
