3310 winch brake band adjustments

I have a 3310 winch on a 350 crawler. The manual says to tighten the adjusting nut until the spring in the lower housing is 3-3/8" long.
There is no way this spring, which is about 4 1/2 inches long, will compress that much by turning the adjusting nut. Is there another method to adjust the brake band?
I turned the adjusting nut until it bottomed out and still can't get to 3 3/8.
