r side squeal

Post by remley » Thu May 22, 2014 11:14 am

Every once in a while I develop a rather loud squeal on the right side of the dozer. Could this come from the upper track roller or the bottom rollers. Or something between the track and rock guard. Is there anyway I can check the rollers or any suggestions. Seems like it happens just traveling, not turning.applying brakes or going slow and pushing. 83 450 c

Thanks

It could be any or all of the above. A little bit of squeal here and there is normal but a loud prolonged squeal may indicate something else. My experience is that those kinds of sounds come from bottom rollers when travelling on a bit of sideslope that puts weight of the crawler to the downhill track. However other things can also cause a momentary squeal; rocks caught up in the trackguard can do the same thing or weight on rear sprockets such as when hauling a rear attachment. There are other, more severe track problems that can cause a noise like that but those would usually be more continuous.

There are a couple things you can to inspect. One is inspect the track alignment while crawler is moving (need a helper) to make sure that track is not being forced laterally towards a pinch point due to misalignment of the front idler. Another is to jack up one side of crawler to get bottom rollers off of the track and manually rotate to see if bearings are shot- same can be done for front and top idlers as long as track weight is not on them (usually easiest to split or slip off track to check front and top idlers).
