Which grease for 350

Post by bts » Tue Aug 12, 2014 6:05 pm

Well all,

after the coolant in the oil scare, I got new filters and oil in the engine, flushed all the old diesel, cleaned everything a bit, 303 in all the requisite orifices, new battery, and hit the button. I got bored while the air was bleeding out of the lines, so I shot a little ether from the can that had been sitting on the machine for the past how many years, and she cackled to life. I closed the bleeders and she hummed right along.

I got so excited, i decided to drive around and everything works, more or less. Right brake/clutch way out but steers and goes, reverser works, hydraulics work. Very stiff to shift the trans. I did not push any dirt or really load the hydraulics yet.

Has that worrisome clunk-clunk upon shutdown - reverser issues I presume.

But...I need to grease the machine and the manual calls for NLGI #0 grease which I can not find locally...yet.

Question: What kind of grease do you use on your crawlers? Nothing special or JD branded or just whatever #2 as available wherever? Or does it need to be #0?

Thanks in advance,
Byron

Hi,

The rollers and idlers want JD Corn Head grease. That is as close as you will come to the old Gargolye, Kendall, etc roller grease. I use chassis grease for dozer and loader pins and bushings, but could use Corn Head there as well. It would tend to push out a little faster, but it is slipperier. :)

Most likely the worrisome clunk-clunk at shutdown is the torsional isolater between engine and reverser making its familar noise that most early 350's make. Not much you can do about it.

Now to unfreeze the track adjusters

Post by bts » Thu Aug 14, 2014 8:34 pm

Thank you Stan, Cornhead it is. The dealer shook his head but when he looked at it, realized it is the only #0 grease he had. It went in easy.

But I can't get the track adjusters to budge - any trick to freeing them up or do I start disassembling?

Should I be worried about the torsional isolator failing or is that just a characteristic I need to learn to live with?

Thanks again.
