79 350c loud noise backing up

Post by cantbeatadeere » Wed Sep 03, 2014 5:36 am

I looked at a 350c that is for sale and when testing it out it makes a very loud knocking from behind or around the flywheel area when reverser is active. On the way home I thought I should have tried it with the reverser in forward and the trans. in reverse to see if it was still there, owner has had it 10 years and said it has always sounded this way with no issues but I don't want to get burned...have been on youtube and not one makes this sound when backing up.---any ideas would be great...if this helps it sounds just like a car with loose torque converter bolts chucking in the flexplate...whats in there that would cause this???

hmmm, possibly...will that cause a knocking noise, much louder in reverse. I had the owner put the reverser in the forward position and shift in reverse with the trans. and the noise was the same.

Hi,

Yes, they make a loud noise when they snap one section loose. The thing is flapping around in there. Before long, it will be completely snapped apart and then you won't be moving in either direction.....

Thanks for the info...looks to me that tortional insulator is the noise, just hasn't let loose yet. the owner says it has sounded like that for the ten years that he has owned it without one problem, and a local dealer told him some make that noise and some don't(wouldn't want that dealer workin on my stuff)...OBVIOUS problem here - just have to decide if it is worth all that work :?:

IF the noise changes from forward to reverse, then I would think it is reverser issue, most likely the countershaft.
