Rock Guards Grade 8 Carriage Bolts

Post by Goober » Wed Oct 15, 2014 12:33 pm

Been shopping around to get some replacement carriage bolts for the rock guards on my 450C. No one that I have found makes Grade 5 or Grade 8 carriage bolts in the 5/8x9" size that we need, so I got some quotes on custom. In sufficient volume the cost for Grade 8 would be in the $12/each range + shipping, cost for Grade 5 would be $10 + shipping. Anybody on the board interested and willing to commit to purchase some of these if I do order a run? These are black oxide BTW, other finishes were too pricey to make it even close to worthwhile.

JDParts specs a cap screw for this location now, but that's horribly frustrating to install as I've discovered, and I can imagine the heads get mangled pretty quick during operation.

Thanks Lurch - don't know why my searches at the very same fastener stores didn't turn up the options you found, good on you.

Deere only sells a replacement part which is a grade 8 cap screw, not a carriage bolt, requiring two people to effectively re-install it.

That's odd, I have bought many rockguard bolts from Deere for the older crawlers. Using the original number, never had a standard bolt subbed in. I can check length on some of the ones I have, they are in the 9" range and give you the deere part number if you want.
