The short answer is yes. Hook up the hot wire (goes through the ammeter to starter positive terminal) and it should be good to go.
I just did this exact replacement on mine (1968) and used an old 10SI from an '85 Pontiac. There are 2 wire tabs on the edge of the alt. looking at the rear, the one on the right ideally goes back to the battery to sense the battery voltage but most of us just connect right to the main output lug, the other one needs to go a 12 volt switched wire to get the alt energized. If you don't use this wire, you will find you have to get a very high RPM to get it to fire up and charge, if at all. I ended up using the field wire from the regulator, the one with the plastic tab on the end, and used a mating male spade to plug right into it. If you have the IP with a solenoid shut off, not mechanical shut down, then you will need a diode in this lead. Let me know and I can help you with the diode wiring.
You will also find the shafts are different diameter and when you try to put on the old pulley (as the belt is usually wider than the automotive belt) you'll find an 1/8" difference, requiring you to enlarge the pulley hole a little to get it to fit on the 10SI shaft. It took me an hour of mucking around with a die grinder as I didn't have the right size drill bit but I got a perfect match and it works great. Huge improvement over the old alt system.
Good luck.

I replaced my JD alternator with a Delco as well. In my case the regulator was bad. If some one wants/needs a JD alternator for authenticity I have one. I also have a delco 12 volt generator ~1959 - 1960 vintage, took it off my 1960 Ferguson tractor, again replaced with a delco alternator.
If you don't feel comfortable with a die grinder you can also go here http://store.alternatorparts.com/1-groove.aspx .
They offer pulleys that will fit the shaft for a 5/8" belt
