450C 2ND GEAR

Post by JUNKMONKEY » Tue Apr 21, 2015 10:49 am

I just bought a broken 1976 450 c with a tooth missing off 2nd gear, please correct me if im in the wrong. I talked to two people with 450c,s and they told me they never use 2nd gear. its a lot of work to replace this gear. pull the engine, gut the transmission, remove the tracks and parts of the rear end. im wondering if I could grind off the teeth on the gear and do away with 2nd gear. and leave it as a spacer. that would save a lot of work. or will that even work. im also looking for a manual for this tractor. in case I have to do the job. thank you, Kelly great bend kansas

Manuals can be obtained directly from the JD bookstore online as a hard copy, CD/DVD, or an instant download PDF. I have posted the link and information specific to the manuals for 350s and 450s several times so if you search for my username and "manual" in the search box you should be able to find them.

Obviously there are other options out there if you don't want to pay Deere's prices such as EPay, etc. but quality and condition can vary for an original and the unauthorized versions can sometimes have poor print quality.

You can also ask Lavoy on this site (the administrator and parts supplier)- not sure he has the manuals for the "new generation" models.

By the time you have adequate access to grind the teeth off how much more work would be involved in repairing it?

I would say I use 2nd gear in my 450C over 60% of the time. IMHO that is my most important gear.

I use 1st for pushing over larger trees etc and loading on the trailer

2nd for most all digging and loading

3rd for long haul of loading and very light digging

4th for road trips to get ice cream.....

Granted I'm always digging in rocky ground and your mileage may vary.

I think you'll be happy with this decision. A 450c is a very powerful and handy machine and having all it's features will reduce operator frustration at the very least.
