450B Clutch Bell Housing

I'm replacing the steering clutches on my dozer but I noticed the 2 top bolts that attach the transmission to the clutch housing are broke, the 2 bottom bolts are alright, I can get the left bolt out but no luck with the other one on the right side. My question is will it be ok with 3 bolts holding it? I also found that the both frames are cracked which is probably what caused the bolts to break. I hate to have to pull the engine and housing but I will if it's going to cause more trouble down the road.

This remaining bolt? Is there enough of it showing so you could weld a nut on it? If not can you get to it and drill it and then try an easy out?

You really need all of the bolts to make your machine as strong as it should be. It would mean a lot of work but it would be worth it in the long run. It also makes your machine worth more if these things are fixed.

Yes I got the left one out by welding a nut on it, not enough showing on the other one to do that, tried drilling it, hard to get any leverage on a drill, close quarters but I will try again before I have to pull engine and housing, thanks.

Somewhere in the archives on this forum, I read about inserting copper pipe into the hole up to the end of the broken bolt and, then carefully arc welding inside the pipe until you build it out enough to attach a head on it. I have not yet tried this myself but I will when I am in your situation. Someone here might be able to offer more on this technique.
450`s c-dozer 6 way, b-loader.
350`s c-loader + ripper, b-loader with winch arch. B-loader with dozer pads

This is a good idea. Although I have not done this myself I have heard of it being done.

There is also an electrode ( rod ) available at most welding supply stores that is made for this purpose. The rod is designed so the flux actually builds out to the side of the hole and then the center is where the metal is built out. It takes a couple of times of chipping the flux away to get it out far enough. It depends on how deep the hole is to get it built out enough to get a nut welded on. I have used this product and it works great. Also the heat from the welding process will help loosen the the threads on the broken bolt.

Hi,

And, when drilling, remember to use left-handed twist drils. Not the usual right-handed ones. Quite often the drilling loosens the bolt shank before using the extractor. ;)

yes you need all 4 bolts to prevent breaking the next weakest part.
we have become extraction experts, haven't we?
there are at least 39 ways to do it.
here is another, you may have already known about.
clean it up, heat it up,quench it with PBblaster. doing this may help in lossening it for the "e-z-out".
also, may be able to smack it with a punch.
lightly tap on the casting too.
curse it, :twisted: :shock: :roll:
make yourself a drill bushing to maintain center,,,, a really long bit might get your drill in the right position.
a mini dremel with a carbide bit...?
have i hit 39 yet... :wink:

You missed 'juice'. A 50/50 mix of ATF and Acetone. Works better than Blaster. ;)
