450c final drive problems

Post by altonlee » Fri Oct 16, 2015 6:42 pm

Hi everyone, new to this site and new to working on a jd 450 c.
Just acquired a older 450 c that has been sitting for a while. Started it up and drove it a bit just to check it for running.
Changing the oil in all the drive trains and transmission as they were milky. Changed the xmission oil and filters and again started it and drove it a bit, Its still milky, then I found that the xmission has a sump I guess for collecting water and trash. Also was told the finals needed to be drained at same time as they use same sump. But they are separate units so how can they use the same ones, as each side has a sump also.

But now the problem, all the plugs are frozen, had to weld a bolt on the left top plug to get it out. When I unscrewed the plug milky oil gushed out, seemed like it was under a little pressure. The plugs on the back will not come out, have welded things to it three times and it will not move, I realize the plug does not get as hot with it being full of fluid.

The drain plug on the right looks like it has been welded over.

The big question can I take that bottom cover off with out removing the track. If I take it off I can drill and retap the plug hole.

Or is there some way to drain the oil with out removing the drain plugs?

Thanks

Alton

Hi Alton and welcome to the forum. My 450C is about 60 miles away right now so I can't look to confirm but I think there is a good chance you could drop the sump housing off the final drive without removing the track. Try posting in the late model crawler support as this is where your machine belongs. Lots of folks much smarter than me there with regards to these things.

The tag on the side says 450 C J not sure what the J stands for. Serial # 228579 T.

Both sides had pressure in them, should there have been. and both were over full. When I took the plug out oil squirted out.

Thanks again

Hi,

J stands for Drawbar Crawler. Meaning it left the factory without dozer or loader, just a drawbar for pulling.

Heating pipe plugs is a good way to break castings, be careful. Heat from welding probably won't do it, but never heat a pipe plug in any casting you don't wish to weld or replace.
