Hi,
My 350C is early, 1978, and has the spring isolator. Yeah, they make a horrible noise when they go. Like someone with a sledgehammer in the bell housing.
I suspect a spun rod bearing. One edge of a shell bearing slipping under the edge of the other makes enough extra load where the engine won't turn over via the starter or by hand. Yet the load isn't so great it quits at idle. Sounds just like the description.
Either way it is pull the engine time.....

Usually they would, I just don't think that is what it is, but I guess possible.
