1966 straight 350

Post by Don2018 » Sun Feb 17, 2019 3:37 pm

Hi Everybody
I'm thinking of doing some preventive maintenance this spring on the fuel injectors. As far as I know, they've not been pulled out and cleaned since we'
ve owned this machine ( almost 30 years) I'm no mechanic! My question is , can i simply pull these injectors out, replace the screen (if they have one),clean the inside of the injector with carb cleaner (like they do on Youtube) and replace them or is this something that I need to leave alone? The machine is running fine right now.

My opinion is leave them alone if your crawler "is running fine right now". I look up things on YouTube at times but I also believe some things people put out on YouTube can create as many problems as they solve. I believe injectors, and injection pumps should go to an injector shop to be tested, and worked on if needed. It takes the right equipment, and experience, to do that properly. Ideally even new replacement injectors should be tested before installation for cracking pressure and spray pattern. JMHO

You don't "clean" diesel injectors, they are rebuilt, or replaced. If you got to the work of pulling them, I would buy new ones.

If it ain't broke--break it so you can justify buying a new one.
