John Deere 450b

Post by Jtreece » Thu Nov 17, 2022 8:58 am

Hey guys! Two questions: I cannot find the oil pressure sending unit anywhere on this dozer. My gauge is not working. Also does it have a filter in the hydraulic oil tank?

If it's like my 450c the oil pressure sending unit is right rear of engine. It should have a filter in the tank yes, you'll have to open the top of the tank to service it. Mine had fallen off and was in the bottom of the tank.

Here is a clip of the picture in the 450B Technical Manual (TM1033) showing the oil pressure sender location. I circled the sender in red as the arrow in the book doesn't stand out well. If your sender has been changed over the years, it may not be as large. A mechanical gauge line uses this same tap point. The oil pressure tap location is common to a number of JD engines of that vintage.

Jim, this picture is for a non-turbo tractor, correct?

Thank you sir! Yes I do not have a turbo but i was thinking it was behind the fuel filter. I couldn't find it in my technical manual what page is it on.

Yes, that is non turbo.

From his response to your post in his other thread, it didn't sound to me like he knows for sure if he has a turbo or not. I believe both air cleaner intakes, turbo and non-turbo, come out the hood. That one showed him where to look if it is non-turbo. I found a video I was able to get a clip of one on a turbo engine from. Both of these pictures are available in my gallery on the picture server, if needed by anyone in the future.

In TM1033 (450B Technical Manual), it is in Section 20 (engine), Group 15 (engine lubrication), Page 1 under Diagnosing Malfunctions, Checking Engine Oil Pressure.

My oil pressure gauge is not working. What is best way to test it. Is it just one wire where I can ground to block to see if sender or gauge?

Test to see that the gauge has power to it when the switch is on. If it does, test to see that it has power out, then test at the sender to see if the power is getting to it. The manual says 103 ohms should give a reading of 40 psi on the gauge.

The oil pressure gauge is moving but the moment I turn the key on even before I start the gauge goes up some . This can’t be right.
