JD 350C reverser

Post by Jamie Dunn » Tue Jul 02, 2024 11:33 am

Slowly over time the reverser has gotten weaker putting the reverser in revers. Since I have owned it I needed to clutch to get into reverse or forward but the reverser always worked well that way. Over time it has got weaker putting it into revers. When it engages reverse works just great. Now if i stop pointing up hill and put in reverse and it rolls backwards it shifts. If dead stop it will not engage into reverse. Any ideas?

I have a 450C that I just installed all the clutches in. OUCH :D If they are similar I can give you some pointers but I am not familiar with a 350C?
God Bless

First thing is pressure checks and all the adjustments by the service manual (John Deere publication number TM1115 for a 350C). Checking and diagnosing is better than guessing. Be sure you have a C series 350, not a straight or B series 350 as those have dry steering clutches. I mention that as re-paints sometimes get the wrong decals and serial number tags get misread.

The reveser works in both F and R but have to use the clutch. When the machine heats up the reverser slows down and the stops workig in reverse. Forward works great. But again onle when the clutch is used to shift from F to N to reverse.

Hi,

There is no engine clutch. That pedal operates a hydraulic valve inside the reverser. So, you have a problem with the hydraulic system within the reverser housing. Note that this hydraulic system is independent of the working hydraulic system for other things which might be on the crawler (blade, bucket, ripper, backhoe).

As mentioned, the first step is to measure reverser hydraulic pressures to try and determine if the issue is the reverser hydraulic pump or the forward or reverse clutch packs and pistons or control valves. One of which is operated by that foot pedal.

As Stan has said, you do not have a clutch, pressing the clutch pedal is doing exactly the same thing as moving the reverser lever. If by doesn't work, you mean that when you shift it doesn't fully engage and you have continued to allow power to be applied, you have likely burnt the clutch discs in the reverser.
You can check all of the pressures externally, but that is it, all other repair will be removing the reverser.

I had to do a lot of troubleshooting on the reverser in my 350C. Maybe this thread will help some:http://www.jdcrawlers.com/messageboard/ ... 969#p77969

There are a few diagrams in that thread from the service manual that show the hydraulic system with a few notes.
