How to check final drive fluid on JD450?

Post by nrowles » Sun Aug 24, 2025 7:04 am

I have a manual and it states how often to check and what fluid to use for the final drive but it doesn’t say how to check or fill. How do I do this? There are 2 plugs beside cap that appear to be different heights. Is the higher one the fill and the lower where you check?

What manual do you have? The 450 Operator's Manual has pictures of the location in both the 250-hour and the 1000-hour service sections. The oil level plug is about axle level on the inside of the final drive housing. Hy Gard or a J20C spec fluid is the required lubricant.

Don't be surprised if this gets moved to the Late Models Boards as it is about a 450.

It can get moved if somebody wants to do that. I goofed.

The manual says JD450 crawler tractors and crawler loaders service manual and it’s 2 inches thick. Unfortunately there are no pictures in the entire lubrication section.

Lavoy will likely move it when he sees it, he generally does.

You need an Operator's Manual for the type of normal service work you are doing. The Operator's Manual covers the things it is common for owner/operators do as regular field maintenance. They give recommended service intervals, lubricant info, locations, adjustments, etc. The dealer should have both available in their shop and the mechanics use the Operator's manual for reference along with the service manual.

I believe the current publication number for the JD 450 Crawler Loader (I am guessing that is what you have from a picture in a previous thread) is OMT23810.

Go to JD Construction and Forestry Bookstore

In the center search box type OMT23810 in where it says Publication Number, then click the search icon at the right of that box.

It should bring up the manual title and info. The prices you see are for hard copies of the different formats you see, if you want something other than the free download. You can click on the Download button, and it will download a FREE PDF copy to your computer which you can save to your files and print from as you wish.
