1993 555G john deere crawler loader

Post by Jamesraney » Thu Apr 16, 2026 5:18 pm

will not move forward . moved about six foot then i stop but it back into reverse , moved fine then tried forward would not move forward. loader has been sitting for some time! My search suggested the problem would be the forward clutch pack, meaning you would have to remove the valve assembly? hoping thats not the case? Also I checked the electrical circuits , they are getting power! any advice would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks
James

Welcome to the boards. Don't be surprised to find this moved over to the Late Models Board, this Early Models Board focuses on machines up to the 2010s. There are only a few here that have a machine as new as yours which is a different animal (the drivetrain is different than the 450E and prior). I am afraid answers may be few.

Do you have the John Deere technical manual TM1403 Operation and tests? That has the info on doing system tests and diagnostic info (as well as wiring diagrams). The Repair manual is TM1404, it will have info on required separation to get to where you diagnose the problem is. It is a two-volume set and you should have both. You should also post whether your crawler is a direct drive or torque converter drive.

My first thought is a failed forward clutch pack. Checking all the shift linkage is the first thing followed by pressure testing are the first things needed.

mine has the torque convertor. I do have one of the TM 1404 manuals but not the TM1403 manual. I take it that's the one which will show how to do a pressure check? it doesn't show it in the TM 1404 manual! any more advice?
Thanks James
