JD 450A - No start after Hydraulic hose failure

Post by sspony » Tue Jun 23, 2026 9:46 am

Hey guys, I have a gray market JD 450A with 95A back-hoe.
A year or so ago I was digging stumps and one of the old back-hoe hydraulic lines blew. It sat for a few months before I finally got around to replacing the hose and when I did the temps had dropped and the battery was dead so I couldn't start it. Life got busy and it sat. This summer I charged the battery and went to start it, no luck. Used other batteries, jump packs etc, still no start. It wouldn't turn over fast and the battery cables were getting super hot. I figured corrosion from sitting had cause a poor ground. After going through all of the wires and cleaning things up and measuring resistance it was still doing the same thing. Slow crank and the wires getting really hot. I figured the starter must have finally failed. So I replaced the starter (fun job!). All of that and still the same problem.

However I noticed after letting it sit for a bit the first couple of cranks would be really fast and it would start to fire off. After some research I'm convinced it has something to do with the hydraulics. I think the starter is trying to pump the hydraulic system which is causing it to be slow and draw too much current through the cables. How do I address this? I read somewhere else where this happened to someone but couldn't find the solution.

Link below for my loader with pics. Thanks!

If you think the issue is hydraulics, start by making sure all the hydraulic control levers are centered (in neutral if you will).

Don't be surprized if this thread gets moved to the Late Models Board where threads on the 450 belong.

Thanks for the response Jim. I went through and toggled all of the hydraulics. It didn't seem to fix the issue.

Good catch on the section, my bad!

Any quick couplers on the hydraulic hoses anywhere? If one is not completely plugged together that could block the pump flow depending on location.

With the crawler battery cables attached, try running a good booster cable from battery negative to one of the starter mounting bolts if you can. Run the positive cable from the battery positive to the solenoid positive post. If it cranks better with the cables on, it would indicate a resistance in the crawler's battery cables.

Does the hydraulics run off a pump that’s turned from the front of the engine?

If so see if there is a spring action disconnect. This will disengage the pump from the engine and would relief any drag the hydraulics have on the starter.

Good thought on the quick connects. The back hoe has a couple to connect it to the machine. I will double check those!
