New Track Pad Install - 350 Straight

Post by bulletpruf » Sun Aug 02, 2026 8:10 am

My 350 came with loader pads, so I ordered 72 of the 12" single grouser dozer pads from Broken Tractor; pretty sure these are made by ITR. I also ordered 300 track bolts and nuts from Broken Tractor; these are stamped "ITR."

Here's the process I used:

1. Clean mud/dirt from bolt heads on track pads so you can get a socket on the old track bolts.

2. Remove old track pads; each pad is attached with four 1/2" - 20 bolts. Generally not difficult, but once in a while one bolt will give you trouble.

3. Use a wire brush on a large angle grinder to clean the track chain where the track pad contacts it.

4. Use a carbide scraper and angle grinder with a flap disk to remove the paint from the bottom of the new track pads where they will contact the track chain. Also remove the paint from the area around the bolt holes on the top of the new track pads. If you don't remove the paint - which is quite thick - once it wears off, your track bolts will be a bit looser than they were when installed.

5. Install new track pads on track chain with four 1/2 - 20 bolts. These are made by ITR for this application, and installed dry (i.e., no anti-seize or thread locker) per the manufacturer. Snug them down a bit.

6. Torque the track pad bolts to 48 ft lbs.

7. Tighten the bolts an additional 120 degrees (1/3 turn) - again, this is the ITR spec.

8. There are 72 track pads, so repeat 71x.

Very tedious job. I'm about halfway done.

Nice work!

I need to do the same to my current 350 when I get it going. I did that job on a 350 Case machine…pain in the butt for sure.

Yep, sure beats the heck out of the worn out loader tracks on it.

will it be time to push dirt?
BTW do you need any help with setting up your mill? i have done a VFD install on my Aliant 9X42 and it was not very expensive.
or do you have 3 phase power?

Yes, I think it's about time to push dirt, so we need to get it to my buddy's ranch outside Fredericksburg. My buddy has been looking at equipment trailers, but hasn't pulled the trigger yet, so we may just hire someone to transport it.

I do need help setting up my mill. My shop has 3 phase power, but it's not switched on yet; I think there's just one more breaker needed or something like that. I have a VFD as well, but I'd rather just connect to 3 phase if I don't need the VFD.

Thanks

when do you want to move the dozer?
how far do you need to move it? (edit i see outside of Fredericksburg)
as to the vfd, if that is a step pully mill (i think i remember it as a step pully) you would like having a vfd on it when using it.
it also increases the resale value (for what that is worth) because it can then be used on single phase or 3 phase.

I'd like to move the dozer later this month. I still have to finish up the tracks and address a few minor issues.

Yes, it's a step pulley mill. I have heard about the benefits of using a VFD to control speed.

Thanks

I'd gladly pay you whatever a local company would charge me to haul it.

no you will not lol. i'm not a CDL and while you paying for the fuel is legit taking payment is not. but i would be glad to help out if the timing works out, I want to be certain (as is practical) that we will not get 1/2 the way there and have issues. building up my tools is my goal so this would be a good test of that skill/equipment. my big trailer is rated 40,000lbs (34,500 under farm use) and my truck is rated to tow 31,500 or so. we would be well withing DOT limits for farm use and this is farm equipment at 10k to 12k for the jd 350 and a 9k empty weight on the trailer. I also would be willing to loan you the trailer in the future if you have a GN hitch, but the trailer is heavy so it eats into your DOT towing limits.

Your trailer has tandem duals? If so, that's going to be overweight for my F350 (1991 crew cab diesel dually) and my buddy's 2022 F350 (SRW crew cab 7.3 Godzilla) with the 350 on it.

My buddy and I have been looking for a trailer for a while, but it's tough to find something that can handle the 350 and remain within towing capacity. The closest is a Big Tex 14 GN (7k axles) or 16 GN (8k axles), but that's a compromise. Really need a 22 GN with tandem duals and need a later model dually that has a towing capacity in excess of 20k.

yep, i was faced with that Delima myself, don't really have to have the ability to tow 20K+ equipment but damned tired of that calculus, so 21 duramax dually and the heavy trailer. BTW i broke the wheel off of my lighter GN pulling my 350 home behind the dually, the bed is too high and it put too much load on the rear axel, the tandem dually trailer will not have that issue. My 3/4 ton duramax is rated for 16800 and would have pulled it within DOT limits but the brake controller went out and i know better than to pull that load without trailer brakes. you are correct a 14K or 16K trailer depending on how heavy they are will hold it and there are a lot of 3/4 ton trucks that can pull that load but you cannot bring anything else along for the trip.
