Hi,

Interesting. I think I shall add the info from the page to the 350 serial number thread over in the FAQ section. If you have seen those extra letters on B series machines, it must have changed sometime during the B run.

Stan,

That makes sense to me that it would be a CEW, very interesting..... This might be a silly question....but what does inside bulldozer and outside bulldozer mean?

Thanks

inside vs outside dozer

Post by NWJD fan » Thu Oct 01, 2015 4:58 pm

What you have is an inside mounted dozer because the dozer C frame or push arms are mounted inside of the tracks. On a normal (not wide pad) undercarriage the blade would be smaller, 6 feet wide I think and not as rugged as an outside mount because a lot of the blade projects beyond the mounting points putting lots of leverage onto the mounting structure and blade pivot points but you do get all hydraulic control for angle tilt and lift. Because you have a wide pad machine your blade has an extension on each end so you can doze the width of the machine. In the parts book your blade is a model 6305.
The outside blade mounts outside of the tracks onto the track frames. Because the support is wider the blade is wider 8 feet on a standard undercarriage 350 and more rugged because it is better supported. Angle and tilt are manual functions on most of these machine.

Well that certainly makes sense, I probably should have known that :-). Thank you for taking the time to write that.

I spoke to Jason today and was able to let him know what I need to buy this first round, I also ordered some misc stuff offline such as filters for a service and some seals for the track adjusters. I will try my luck at rebuilding mine first and then I guess if that doesn't work ill be buying some different ones.

I am trying to track down a good service manual for this machine also if anyone has one they could part with.

Thanks

Thought I would share these, this is just how I found it after I purchased the cabin. Do not know exactly how long it sat there but I know it was for many years.

Update

I received my parts from Jason a few weeks back and was able to fly most of them out to the dozer. We spent about 8 hours swapping parts and servicing the dozer, after a short and exciting battle getting a jumped track back on was able to do some work :-) I am waiting on 1 track adjuster to come in so I can get that on and keep the track tight, then I just need to get the rest of the new pads flown out and installed.

I have two concerns / questions for my next step with this dozer.

1. I need to adjust the steering and there is no brake when the peddle is depressed, how hard is it to adjust the steering / brakes?

2. I ran the dozer for about 45 minutes clearing around my cabin and a few times with I put it in reverse and let the clutch out it seemed to engage slowly. This was not the case every time, maybe 4 or 5 times.. it almost seemed like something was slipping until it locked in. Any thoughts on that would be very much appreciated.

Also when I took the dozer the rest of the way apart I discovered that the inner axle was not broke, It turns out that the drive gear and hub was stripped. I have an inner axle I would like to sell if anyone needs one... What's one of those worth?

I will add updated pictures of the dozer.....

Thanks again for ALL the help!!

That is amazing, most people never have the actual resolve to get something that far gone ( that they themselves did not tear down) back into service.

I tip my hat to you!

Thank you Sir!

It has been a fun and interesting project and there is still more to come on this. It has been difficult due to it being so far off the grid, all the planning, research and understanding that I need prior to flying out or making the long boat ride to insure I have what I will need when I get there.

I do owe everyone on this forum for the input and suggestions for helping me get to where I am now.

Darren

That crawler is a thing of beauty, especially because of where it is. If only it could talk, imagine the stories. Those pads did not bend without some resistance. Seat time on that one will be extra sweet.

Just some thoughts. Years ago, before grooming machines, except for Tucker Snocats, Killington tried a 350 set up with wide pads. We found that it and the crawler under carriage didn't like firm soils much. Worked pretty well on snow and in boggy soils, however. We learned to use "k" turns, basically a three point turn, to lessen the strain on the dozer's track system. We still use this technique with snow cats to extend belt, crossbar, and drive motor life. As you can imagine, the 350 was cold to use, and slow. Good luck with your machine. As others have said, your perseverance is admirable. Paul

Thank you guys, it does make this project even more special to hear comments like that from others. I agree if this old girl could talk..... what would she say? I have 20 acres at my cabin and just walking around and seeing the land scape and places where you can see where the dozer has been many years ago.

I also wanted to show these pics below, when we got it all back together we found the track adjuster on the left side was broken and would not hold grease. We tried a jack that was quickly bent out allowing the track to de rail :( We tried a bottle jack we found on the property and a handy man jack that would not fit. Ultimately we found an old piece of pipe, a rusty hack saw blade and but it the correct length to hold the track tight. :) I do have a new adjuster headed my way.

Hey, just thread the pipe, add a coupling; instant adjuster :-)
I love McGuivered temporary solutions. The car jack looked worth a try.
