Loud clunk in tracks

Post by splam » Sat Jun 13, 2015 7:49 pm

I have a straight 350 that I installed chains and read drive spockets about three years ago. I did not use the crawler much since then. I now have a project going and I have a loud clunk that comes and goes in the tracks. It does not do it all the time but seems to be worse after turnings tight or going down a grade. It looks like the track jumps when it makes the noise. It is worse on th right side but both side make the same loud clunk. Anyone have any ideas?

Could just be rocks in the chains and sprockets......they make the chains jump and can be very loud :) :)

Loose tracks slip on the sprockets however, if it is not this or rocks etc. then........

I would suggest a close inspection of the 8 bolts that hold on the rear crossbar.
Loose or broken bolts are common on the 350s and if the crossbar can move just a little either way it will cause the sprockets to hit on the rear rollers, check for damage on the teeth.

Hi,

Also check track tension. If a little loose, the roller flanges will try to ride up the sides of the chain links during turns. When the turn ends, they will clunk as the roller face hits the link. This will be worse if the chain pins and bushings are worn - even if they have been turned. Track snake is what we call this.
