missing balancing cams

Post by carson » Fri Aug 14, 2015 7:47 pm

currently tearing down the engine in my 450 plain high lift. seems to not have what the manual calls balancing cams. from the looks of the bushings (like new) there may never have been any in this motor. what are they and more importantly, do i need them ?

thanks,
carson

ps wasn't running when i bought it

I am assuming you have the 4219 engine in this machine? I have been in several of these engines, both AG and Industrial and they all had the balancing shafts in them. I'm not going to say that it isn't possible because as sure as I did then someone would say that it is. So, I would check with Deere to be sure. I would suspect someone has been in your machine and didn't know what they were doing and left them out of the engine. Again... I'm guessing here. If you have the engine tag number, then you should be able to go to any Deere dealer and have them run the number for you. They will be able to tell you for sure. Hope this helps and good luck. :D

Thanks Leonard, that seems logical to me. Nothing else on this machine has been as the seller implied. But, thats okay, i knew it was a pig in a poke when i bought it. The engine plate has two series of numbers on it:

top row-T04239D215432

second row-4239DT002

I'll get by the Deere Luxury resort and parts dealer later next week.

Okay, your engine is a TO4239 the D is for diesel. the 215432 is the engine serial number. Second row of numbers is basically an engine type number. You can take that first set of numbers to a Deere dealer and they can tell you what all your engine will need.

I'm not as familiar with the 450 family as I am the 350s but the early 450s I was around had 4219 engines in them. If your machine is a straight 450 then I would say someone has put a later model engine in at some point. This happens a lot with these Deere machines as the engines will interchange pretty easily. However, if you have the machine serial number, then Deere can tell you what engine it had in it from the factory. Although this doesn't really matter at this point sense you have a 4239 engine to deal with.

It being a 4239, I would say it should have the balance shafts in it. You might find those select used and save a few bucks over what Deere will want for new shafts. They may surprise me though and not be that high. Good luck! :)

4239d engine

Post by pondhogvt » Sun Aug 16, 2015 2:34 pm

Hi sir and welcome to the forum.. I have a set of balance shafts if you need them... $150 for both plus shipping...

I just put a 4239d engine in a 450C dozer and it did not have the balance shafts in it..

4239D means naturally aspirated a 4239T means turbocharged...

my motor sounded good for about 1 1/2 minutes... then not so good.. I haven't torn it apart to see what happened????

but I will.... your problem as described sounds like the starter or an electrical related problem at this point... good luck.. Mark.
